Using a luggage scale before departure
A luggage scale provides an indication before departure. For a useful result, lift the completely packed bag correctly and interpret the display carefully.

Prepare the measurement
First check the scale's load limit and the condition of its strap or hook. Attach it to a carrying handle suitable for lifting the bag. A telescopic pulling handle is not automatically intended for this purpose. Stand where you can briefly hold the bag clear of the floor without twisting or hitting furniture.
Weigh the luggage as it will actually travel. Covers, straps and chargers added afterwards all count. Select the correct display unit. A value in pounds cannot be compared directly with an allowance expressed in kilograms. Check the battery indicator too, and reset the scale according to its instructions if necessary.
Lift smoothly and wait for a stable reading as described in the manual. Repeat if the bag swung heavily or touched the floor. Widely different results suggest that the method or scale needs checking. Do not attempt an unsafe lift simply to obtain a number; arrange suitable assistance if needed.
Use the result with some margin
A portable scale and the check-in desk scale may not display precisely the same value. Avoid deliberately packing to the exact limit when a small discrepancy would cause difficulty. The appropriate margin depends on the luggage and any anticipated additions. Weighing does not replace measuring external dimensions or checking the permitted number of pieces.
Read the conditions for your actual fare and operating airline. A weight rule from another ticket or an earlier trip may not apply. With several flight sectors, account for every relevant allowance. If you move contents between bags, check the other bag afterwards rather than overlooking its limit.
A small scale may be useful for the return journey when you have acquired extra belongings. It also takes up space and weight itself, however. Record the starting weight if useful and think about transport before buying souvenirs. A complete packing trial in good time is more helpful than hurried rearrangement immediately before departure.
