Taking a bicycle on a train: booking and space
A bicycle space must fit the particular train. Plan the bike, passenger and transfer together before committing to the journey.

Check bicycle carriage across the whole chain
Review every section, not only the longest train. Conditions may differ between long-distance services, regional trains and local transport. A suitable long-distance reservation does not automatically solve the journey to the station.
Read each operator’s current rules for the bicycle type. A standard bike, folded bicycle and larger specialist model may be treated differently. Describe your own equipment precisely if published information is unclear.
For DB long-distance travel, check the bicycle ticket and storage reservation against the actual connection. Select the bicycle option during search instead of looking for space only after purchasing the passenger ticket.
Rehearse the change with bike and bags
Consider how the bicycle moves through the station. Stairs, lifts and narrow connections can change the time required. Check whether panniers need removing for boarding and whether you can handle the bicycle and bags together.
With companions, a clear division of tasks helps. It should not assume someone can safely carry a heavy bike when that has not been established. Choose a connection with an appropriate margin.
Investigate an alternative if a section is cancelled. Space for a passenger does not necessarily mean an available bicycle place. This is why disruption can affect a bicycle journey differently from travel with only a small bag.
Before departure and aboard
Keep passenger ticket, bicycle documentation and reservation together. Check current carriage position and designated boarding areas. Orienting yourself early on the platform is more useful than a hurried move after the train arrives.
Follow instructions for positioning and securing the bicycle. Doors and passages must remain clear. Ask staff when uncertain instead of leaving it somewhere unsuitable.
Plan the route out of the destination station as carefully as boarding. A bicycle supports an enjoyable holiday when the final approach and accommodation storage work too. Ask about a suitable storage location rather than only whether bicycles are welcome somewhere inside the property.
