Preparing offline maps for arrival

A downloaded map can make arrival easier when connectivity is weak. Its usefulness depends on saving the right area and testing the features your arrival actually requires.

Save more than the accommodation pin

Choose an area covering the arrival station or airport, accommodation and possible interchange locations. A tiny download around the hotel is of limited use if the connection fails before you reach it. For a driving journey, include plausible alternative roads within the saved area.

Download using a stable connection and confirm completion. Check storage space, regional availability and possible updates. A transfer that has started is not yet a usable offline map. Make sure the correct region remains stored on the device you will actually carry.

Save the full accommodation address separately as text. Add the entrance, doorbell name or approach instructions when these differ from the general map marker. In a large complex, locating the correct entrance may matter more than identifying the centre of the building.

Test the feature you will actually need

Before travelling, temporarily disable data access and open the downloaded area. Check more than whether the map remains visible: try the search or navigation you intend to use. Different apps provide different functions offline.

Google, for example, states that public-transport, cycling and walking directions are unavailable offline. A downloaded road map is therefore not automatically a complete replacement for walking instructions from the station. Consult current help for the app and device you are using.

For the final approach, a saved description containing street names and a few landmarks can help. Record the required station exit and which side of the street serves your stop. A screenshot should have a readable scale, rather than showing an entire long journey as an almost invisible line.

Separate static orientation from current information

Offline material cannot reliably provide every current closure or changed departure. Recheck the journey when connected and follow signs on the ground. If the intended entrance is closed, do not continue solely because a saved line passes through it.

Keep the ticket, accommodation contact and arrival instructions accessible offline too. The map solves only the geographical part of arrival. A more accurate location does not open a locked hotel gate or supply a missing entry code.

Arrange sufficient battery power and an accessible way to charge. Where several people travel together, another traveller can save the address and instructions. Arrival then does not depend entirely on one device that needs charging or has stopped working.
