Choosing packing cubes for your clothes and bag

Packing cubes can keep clothing in useful groups. Whether they save space or simply add extra wrappers depends on their shape and your luggage.

Packing clothes into a packing cube

Choose around the compartment, not the set

Measure the usable main compartment of your bag. Wheel housings, telescopic handle rails and curved corners can interrupt the floor. A rectangular set will therefore not necessarily fit neatly into a suitcase with matching external dimensions. Draw the proposed cube footprints on paper and place them inside your luggage. This simple exercise reveals leftover spaces more clearly than a product photograph.

Then consider which groups you actually need together while travelling. Underwear in a small cube and tops in a larger one might work well. A complete set may be unnecessary for just one change of clothes. Very small cubes introduce numerous separate zips; one enormous cube provides little more separation than the main compartment already offers.

Compression has limits

A compression zip mainly reduces space around soft clothing. It does not shrink shoes, chargers or bulky fastenings, and it does not reduce weight. Fill a cube only to the point where both zips work without excessive pulling. A tightly packed block can distort the shape of a soft travel bag in an unhelpful way.

Assess the fabric against the intended contents. A mesh window helps identify clothing but provides no protection from spilled liquid. An enclosed fabric is not automatically waterproof either. Shoes or damp laundry may need a different solution. Do not use a clean packing cube as long-term storage for wet textiles merely because it has a zip.

Rehearse using it in the room

Pack a real weekend selection at home and remove one particular garment. If you must lift out three cubes first, rearrange them. At your destination a cube might sit in a drawer or remain inside your luggage. It should open on the available surface without its lid constantly folding back over the contents.

Consider cleaning and drying when buying as well. Clothes can be removed and washed quickly, whereas a multilayer cube may take longer to dry. Identification by size or colour is usually enough; extra labels and accessories only earn their place when several travellers use similar pouches. After the first trip, retain the divisions that actually saved you time searching rather than keeping every piece of a set in use.
