Nuremberg: planning walks through the old town

Nuremberg’s old town looks compact but includes noticeable changes in elevation. A useful route accounts for the climb to the castle and the paths beside the Pegnitz.

Put the climb in the right part of the day

The Imperial Castle stands above the old town. If you want to visit, do not treat the ascent as an insignificant final stop after hours of walking. Either begin with the higher area or arrange a break before climbing. Your energy, the weather and any reserved tour should determine the choice.

From St Lorenz, you can continue towards the Pegnitz and main market square, with the route eventually climbing to the north. Choose a street sequence that suits your starting point. An official suggested circuit does not have to be followed in full. A walk ending somewhere different can shorten the day when a convenient connection to your accommodation is available there.

Treat the river, lanes and castle differently

Beside the Pegnitz, bridge views and brief pauses may be the focus. Around Weißgerbergasse and Tiergärtnertorplatz the perspective changes again. Allow time for these transitions rather than rushing between photograph locations. Entering the Albrecht Dürer House or castle also requires time for admission and attentive looking.

A short visit might combine the main market square, one river section and the castle area. A longer day can add one selected collection. Several museums plus a complete walking circuit form a substantially different programme. Decide beforehand which version you actually want.

If mobility is limited, the broad phrase “walk around the old town” is not specific enough. Investigate slopes, paving, individual steps and the actual entrances. An alternative approach may ease part of the route without making every building fully accessible.

Include the market and the way out

Events can change how the main market square is used. If a particular market is your reason for travelling, verify its dates separately. An ordinary city visit should still work without a specific event being available.

Notice where you intend to leave the old town. Walking directly from the castle area back to the station still takes part of your day. A final break near the exit can be more comfortable than adding another spontaneous climb.

Save more than a list of place names on your phone. Keep the connections between them as well. If you become tired, you can then omit a section without having to work out which bridge or lane leads towards your preferred exit.
