Heidelberg: allowing time for the old town and castle

Heidelberg Castle stands above the old town. Seeing it from below and visiting it properly are different plans, with transport, admission and the return journey to consider.

Heidelberg Castle above the town

Treat the old town and castle as two visits

The old town supports a connected walk between Hauptstraße, the market square and the Neckar. The castle complements this area but is not simply another level stop beside it. Decide whether you want a substantial visit or mainly the view. That choice affects both the time needed and the ticket you select.

Arrival at the main station also does not mean you are already in the old town. Include the journey to your actual starting point. If carrying luggage, establish where it will go before beginning a hillside walk or entering an attraction. An early train only creates extra sightseeing time when the practical arrangements work too.

Do not confuse the funicular with the whole outing

The official castle ticket includes specified visitor areas and the lower funicular section. Read the current description before purchasing: included transport does not mean every guided visit or further excursion is covered. A particular interior tour may have additional arrangements.

At Kornmarkt, the approach to the funicular can fit into your old-town walk. Allow for waiting and for the route from the station to the areas you want to see. Using the railway does not eliminate all walking within the site. For individual mobility needs, detailed visitor information is more useful than the general statement that the castle is reachable by train.

If you want to walk up or down, check the route, slope and surface first. Do not choose it spontaneously just because a queue is longer than expected. Unplanned exertion may change the rest of your day more than an additional waiting period.

Leave a quieter finish beside the Neckar

After the castle, a shorter walk towards the Neckar and Old Bridge may be enough. Another substantial ascent is not an obligatory addition. On a day trip especially, avoid filling every remaining minute before your train with new destinations.

Set a latest return to the old town and a time to leave for the station. The interval can hold a meal or an open-ended walk. With an overnight stay, the river section can instead become the following morning’s activity.

Let weather influence the order. A viewpoint feels different in clear conditions and low cloud. A flexible old-town walk is easier to move than a reserved tour, so only genuinely necessary parts of the programme should have fixed times.
