Freiburg: separating a city visit from a Black Forest outing
Freiburg can be a base for a Black Forest visit, but walking around the city and making an outing beyond it deserve separate blocks of time.

Decide what kind of outdoor time you mean
A short visit to Schlossberg is different from a separate Black Forest walk. The first keeps the city visit, a break and a viewpoint close together. The second requires travel out and back, route length and conditions at the destination to be considered. Sharing the Black Forest label does not make these outings equally demanding.
For a single weekend, select one main destination beyond the old town. Several places may look close on a map while still requiring additional changes or drives. One properly prepared outing gives you more time at the actual destination.
Keep the Freiburg day compact
The cathedral and old town can form a connected sequence of streets, squares and a meal. Further old-town streets lead towards Schwabentor. If you want an elevated view, add Schlossberg as a separate choice. Tourism information describes approaches from Stadtgarten and the connection from Schwabentor towards Kanonenplatz.
Choose an approach that fits your needs. A short distance on the map says little about a slope. If using the Schlossbergbahn, check current operation and think about the descent as well. Transport uphill does not remove the need to plan the remaining paths.
If you enter a museum, make it a clear focus. Rain may provide a good occasion for an interior visit, but the day does not have to contain every original old-town stop too. Keep a dry interval for the places you particularly want to experience outside.
Plan the outing backwards from the return
Find a realistic return connection first. This establishes when you need to leave the chosen destination. Then decide how much walking or activity fits before that time. If missing one departure would cause a long wait, choose an earlier return and retain a margin.
Your bag should suit the outing you actually selected. A city shoulder bag may be uncomfortable on a longer walk, whereas extensive equipment could be unnecessary for a brief viewpoint visit. Check terrain, weather and your own capabilities instead of assuming easy conditions because Freiburg is nearby.
If conditions are unsuitable, another city activity is a complete alternative. There is no need to force the excursion merely because it was originally intended to fill the second day.
