Reading room size and layout in listings
Room area is a starting point, not a complete description of usable space. The position of beds, luggage and additional sleeping places matters as much as the advertised number.

Match the figure to the room you are booking
First establish whether the stated area belongs to the selected room category. A gallery may show several categories together, so its most spacious photograph does not necessarily illustrate the cheapest available offer. If descriptions conflict, ask which size and facilities apply to the exact category you intend to reserve. Use its full name in your message to avoid an answer about the property in general.
If the distinction affects your decision, ask what the quoted area includes. A total figure does not reveal the space beside the bed. A generous bathroom, long entrance passage or awkward recess may occupy much of it. A floor plan or straightforward description of the clear routes through the room can be more useful than the number alone.
Imagine the room in use
Look beyond the tidy photograph. Mentally add an open suitcase, a coat and the belongings you want within reach at night. Is there somewhere to put them, or will everything remain on the floor? Can two people pass the bed while a bag is open? A limited walkway may be manageable for one night but become a recurring inconvenience over a longer stay.
For a sofa bed, its unfolded position is the important one. Ask whether the table remains accessible and whether the route to the door or bathroom stays clear. A photograph of the closed sofa cannot answer those questions. Establish whether the extra bed is permanent or prepared specifically for your reservation. Permitted occupancy and a layout that feels workable to you are separate matters.
If separate sleeping places are necessary, the phrase double room is not enough. Check the bed description and confirm any essential spacing or separation between rooms. For families or friends travelling together, a door between two areas may matter more than a few additional square metres in one open space. Prioritise the arrangement that solves your particular sleeping requirements.
Ask a question the property can answer
A useful message names the category, occupancy and space requirement: we are booking for three people; will the bathroom remain accessible when the sofa bed is open? That gives staff something specific to check. A general request for a spacious room is open to interpretation and may be treated as a preference rather than a confirmed feature.
Read the reply alongside the pictures. A smaller room need not be ruled out if its layout works. Equally, a larger figure cannot resolve an unanswered question about movement or sleeping arrangements. Save any confirmed feature with the reservation and check the setup soon after arrival, while there is still an opportunity to ask about a discrepancy without disrupting your evening plans.
